Okay, all you dirtballs, answer this one. I got a 2002 KLR A16 that has a GIVI tailbag and an 11" Clearview windscreen. I got an invitation to do some dirt with another dirtball but I ain't never done any dirt. The GIVI hardbody tailbag comes off real easy with a key. The 11" Clearview, on the other hand, is mounted with hard-to-remove hardware. (I still have the original short windshield in the garage but I'm thinking it would be too much work to use it). The question is this: am I gonna mangle meself or me windshield real bad doin' dirt with a tall shield? Thanks in advance for your replies and your experience. Steve, Lose the Givi box, lose the tall wind sheild, and lose the mirros also. If your on the dirt, and your new to it, chances are your gonna go down a few times. Body armor may look Star Wars like, but it saves body parts, get some if you can or borrow some. Also get a foldabe mirror, if you go over the bars and catch your self on a mirror, you'll know about it. Maybe get some bark buster bars too. Apart from that .. HAVE FUN :-) Dave Salem OR

Steven, If you're just riding fire roads or such, probably could leave it on with no ill effects. If you're riding more aggressivley, out exploring jeeps trails or single track, or WFO across the desert there, then take off the tall one and don't put anything on. Since you are a self proclaimed novice at riding dirt, your nice windshield would just get broken the first time you fall, 30minutes work to protect a $90 windshield. Never heard of anyone getting decapitad by their Clearview, but I would supoose that it could happen. I've had my Kawi tall screen bonkme in the helmet while riding some whoops, not pleasant, but survivable. If you see that you like dirt riding, then think about getting a beater bike to practice on. Older MX or enduro bike on which you can do your share of crashes. Could probably find something in your area for $500-1000. And sell it for the same after a years worth of riding. Unless it's dual sport/enduro, you need a trailer or pickup truck to shuttle the thing around in (that's why everbody likes a good friend with a pickup). Beater bike is much cheaper than replacing the plastics on your pretty KLR. Mark A1, and Pretty A9 Barbie bike --- In DSN_klr650@yahoogroups.com, Steven Wilson wrote:

I ride offroad a lot with my A15. I suggest the following: Radiator guard bar. Happy-trails will save the radiator but allow it to bend back and crush the fan. Dual-Star bar is bulkier but more effective. Metal handguards. At least carry a spare clutch lever, but the metal handguards are better (100's of falls, no broken levers). Maiers makes ones that cost $30 or so. The plastic Acerbis' don't work. The Acerbis with a full metal bar inside work well but are expensive. metal bash plate. remove the windshield entirely. Remove the mirrors when you get to the trails. forget about hard luggage. If you can't put it in your backpack, don't take it. Try 15psi front and 17psi rear. Air back up before you ride home on the road. Devon A15 Steven Wilson wrote:

ideas for quick windshield release ?? mangle self ?

Post by klr6501995 » Wed Feb 26, 2003 8:05 pm

Any ideas on quick relaease mounting of tall KAW windshield ? I don't want to break the expensive shield when I venture off the road. JUst bungee it to the rack if going looks rough. First day I put the tall shield on I got to find out how big of a pig the klr is in sugar sand.Testing my new Kendas. Dropped it. Bout never got the bike up, Never would have if it weren't for some broken branches I hiked a few yards to get. I think I would rather pick the bike up loaded out of Flint Hills mud.
