klr newbie 'nklr'

Wow. Is this group prolific or what!! Thanks for all the replies. I am not 5000 mi away from home like I said. It is 8,000 miles- by air. Here's a bit/lot about me for any who might wonder... Who & why - I am a medical graduate from India. Came to the US for specialization. But first I have to get through the licensing exams here. Since all my time in this country were spent in an academic environment...I wish to see the other facets before I return 'Home'. I plan to do it with my Klr650. Where & what - After an year in Ann arbor, Michigan doing a masters, I moved to Birmingham, to stay with freinds at UAB. I sold the only car I had and bought this A17. This is going to be my only transportation medium untill I get into residency. (cant afford any either, after what I did). How & when - I plan to do my cross country tour next summer if I get lucky. Meanwhile I hope to get aquainted with the bike. My previous riding experience is ona couple of Kawis (two stroke 100 & 125 ccs) and a honda (four stroke 100) in India. Rode parts of my country 40,000Km approx on a Kawi100. What amazes me after all these years is my mechanical knowledge- zero. Short of removing and fixing tires on my old kawi...I know nothing about bikes. Sorta shamed to say that after 12 years of riding. Reading this groups logs makes me even more apprehensive to maintain the A17. but what the hell...I am ready to learn it the hard way. BTW... the only other website I spend time besides this list is HorizonsUnlimited. If any of you are Roundtheworld bikers...and are planning to go to southern India, try me for information and help from my freinds and family all over that part of the country. thanks Rajesh
