standard mods
Scott,
I agree with the Brooklyn Bum. IMO, I would upgrade
the suspension first and adjust the gearing to your
tastes. At the same time I would add some basic
protection to the bike (bash plate, hand guards,
radiator protector) for the inevitable lay over,
before I would touch the engine side of the house.

upgrades
The KBR 650 is a GREAT dual sport bike, not a dirt bike. I have run
over lots of rough country in eastern Oregon and northeastern Nevada
with it. If you load it a lot, the rear suspension will bottom out,
you may want to upgrade. As far as brakes, I test my yesterday (00
model) and skidded the front on dry payment; lockup is good enough
for me. I haven't found a problem with the front suspension, I did
add a fork brace for control. The engine is fine. The muffler
weights 35 pounds, loose it for a lighter model (SuperTrapp IDS quite
series), not a bad sound. Add some barkbusters, with covers to
protect the clutch and brake levers, a good set of tires, get rid of
the safety switches on clutch and side stand, add a center stand, add
a real bash plate, gel battery, add a Garmin GPS EMAP or V on a RAM
mount; load it with mapsource TOPO. Add all your custom stuff you
like from Big Cee, Arrowhead Motorsports, Dual Starr, Cycoactive,
Sagebrush Machine, and Happy Trails. It your bike be proud of it and
have a lot of fun. John
