Hey, feel lucky and fortunate, even grateful for what you
have...you'll feel better. Got both eyes? Good! All arms and legs
there? Terrific. You're lucky. Could be a lot worse. You have a
big motorcycle to ride? Way more fortunate than many, or most, in
this world.
There are no guarantees.

Obviously, practically everyone on this list is enjoying a luxury. Most
people in this country enjoy serious luxury by the standards of some parts
of the world. If you're going to bring all that up, I'll point out that
anything mich bigger than a 90cc honda step-thru is wasteful, if you really
NEED a bike at all. Noone living in the five boroughs of NYC "needs" a bike-
there's a perfectly good subway system!
I was whining because we live in a country with low population density and
cheap gas, and there are very few legal places to ride near where I live.
The public land that my tax money supports is off limits. Most private land
where trail riding would be tolerated or simply ignored is abused by people
who steal, vandalize, and litter.
In order:
My kid is healthy.
My wife is healthy.
I'm healthy.
good marriage
good place to live
good career
etc etc
motorcycles are so far down the list that there's no room to list everything
in-between. Won't make me less irritated by the situation. Yes, I am indeed
fortunate that I have no more pressing concerns.
Those of you living out west, in the "wide open spaces"- take a good look at
the northeast. This is what it could be like for you in a few decades,
you'll be stuck between the rock of overdevelopment, and the hard place of
anti-motorsports legislation and sentiment.

They'll have 4,500 miles of beautiful forested legal riding area?

Most of the state of PA, with 3/4 of the best riding concentrated in
the central/north central part of the state.

That's about 5 hours driving from NYC. How much has the available land shrunk in
the last few years?

Out west here we have lots of "skid trails" in the coastal areas.
They are little sidehill roads put in usually around the 50's and
60's by logging companies. Usually cut by a little D2 or something
of that ilk, for skidding logs down to a "deck". Lots of obstacles,
too. Any main skid trails that are frequently used have waterbars,
which if you're on a KLR, really slow you down and kill your rhythm
going up a steep switchback. In fact, if you're on a KLR for riding a
skid trail, you're on the wrong bike. Maybe a XR250 might be
better.

Basically zero, as 99% is state forest land and the Dept of
Conservation and Natural Resources is generally friendly. About 3000
miles are forest road and the other 1500 miles are unmaintained old
woods trail, legal for use by any vehicle eligible for street use in
PA, i.e., Jeeps & DualSports... no dirtbikes or ATVs. ATVs do have
several of their own dedicated areas though.

Well, I finally had the cash & time to get around to getting this
project off the ground. I picked up my Barum C27 90/90x21 front tire
a couple weeks ago. I had a hard time finding studs to fit in the
little holes. So, I decided to experiment. I found nails that are the
perfect size; the nail is about a hair wider than the hole and the
nail head is about twice the diameter. I lube the head with rubber
cement and with pliers, shove the nail in the hole. I then trim the
nail down with wire cutters to about 1/16" above the knob surface, So
far I installed 270 nails, at which point I ran out. There are a
total of 800 holes, and I'm gonna fill 'em all.... hopefully before
spring.
Total cost of this experiment will be about $70.
