going out for chinese food - - the hard way

Post by William Woodson » Wed Aug 01, 2001 12:56 am

In May-August of 2000, I was the only KLR rider in a group of 14 bikes that rode around the world, led by Helge Pedersen. We were in about a dozen countries, and spent a month in China. Today I received word that one of the original organizers of that trip plans to do a month-long, China-only bike trip in the summer of 2002. I plan to be on it, and this time it'd be nice to have some other KLR's along. It won't be cheap - - probably $8-$9,000, including round-trip airfare, domestic airfare within China to the far western border near Pakistan, shipping of the motorcycles to China and back to the U.S., all hotels, most meals, all necessary documentation, including Chinese driver's licenses, and license plates, English-speaking Chinese guides, a chase vehicle for the entire time, etc. Pretty much everything will be covered except fuel for the bikes, and a few meals. The plan is to fly to the far-western part of China and ride the country from west-to-east, back towards Beijing, covering probably 4,000 miles in 30 days. Last time we rode mostly south-to-north, popping out of China at its northern border with Russia/Mongolia. Last time, even though we rode over 3,000 miles in China, we didn't see a lot of geographical diversity, because we were in the highly-populated coastal lowlands almost the entire time. From a geographical diversity standpoint, this trip in 2002 should be far more interesting. The trip will be 30 days, almost certainly in the June-July-August timeframe, but dates have not been set. If anyone's interested, let me know, either on list, or off. Thanks.

what would cause this problem

Post by saab_3@yahoo.com » Wed Aug 01, 2001 8:34 am

Yesterday While riding my 86 KL 600 The bike stalled before it stalled it popped. The bike sat for a few minutes then restarted drove it 1/4 mile then the same thing happened again. This happened 2 more times. The bike sat for an hour started again but the idle was real high about 4000. I turned the bike off tried blowing the carb out with air put everything back together and tried to kick the bike over, It almost started then died. I am going to put a new plug in it todat and try it again. Is something messed up in the carb that would cause this . Thanks for any input Jon

You know I'd like to go but my KLR is so tricked out and technologically sophisticated I'd be afraid the Chinese would find a way to give me a flat tire so they could seize it and take it apart to study! Morgan
