klr650 service manual?

Post by Greg Paul » Wed Mar 28, 2001 6:23 pm

I bought a '97 KLR650 about a week ago. Went to a Kawa dealer to buy a Clymer manual. Per the salesman, no such animal. Per the salesman, the OEM service manual is much better anyway and he just happens to have one available for $45. Here's the goop... The manual says on the front KLR600. Flip it over and it says 1984. It also has a part number of 99924-1050-01. Per the salesman this is the "base" manual and the factory adds "new" info to a supplement you can buy for another $30. Being the trusting sort I bought the Service Manual and will wait on the supplement. Do I smell a rat or is there just something stuck in my nose? Any help will get you and your bike a cruise around the world for 120 days and stops at any ports of your choice...... maybe. :-)))

I can't remember what I paid ($35?) for the base (KLR600) manual but I don't think it was $45. The supplement is part #99924-1080-55 year 87 to 95. I think it costs $25. Go to www.buykawasaki.com and look under "parts" for your KLR. they have the manuals listed. I think Kawasaki discontinued the 96 - ** manual. don't know why. It was listed on there web site but not now.

The Kawasaki website list the KLR600 manual for $36.95 and you can buy it direct. no supplenment listed. Looks like you have a dealer that can't be trusted. Good news is it only cost you $8.00 (45-36.95) to find that out. Better then paying $200 for a fake valve adjustment.

No, the dealer is right (for a change on this list), there is a supplement and it IS needed. Prices may vary slightly from dealer to dealern and region to region. I've got a 96 and I have both the base manual and the supplement and have used both of them in tinkering with my big leggo. dat brooklyn bum

It isn't as bad as $8. I recall paying buykawasaki an additional $5- 10 for shipping and handling. Brad

Seems like your salesman is giving you the straight dope. I have the manuals, you DO need the KLR 600 + supplement. I paid $ 75.00 (CDN ) for both. Steve Pye

While "Sears Cataloging" the arrowheadmotorsports web page, and looking for the Pro Gel Grips(very happy with them), I'm pretty sure I saw the Base and Supplement manuals listed. I don't remember the prices, but I'm pretty sure they were comparable or better than the kawasaki website prices. Mike A15 BTW, bought the Renthol soft grips from the dealer and ordered the pro grips from Fred a week later at almost half the price even w/shipping. The Renthol grips didn't feel much better than stock, but the pro grips seem to have made quite a bit of difference in absorbing the engine vibration. Very Much a New Rider again and just my personal observation.

Greg: The supplement manual does exist, because I saw one one time. However, buying one is another story. You can get the base manual anywhere, but the supplement manual seems to be scarce. I have been waiting for an eternity to get the one I ordered from DualStar. I hope to have it some day (That's a subtle hint to Dual Star), so I can start using some of these maintenance tips I have been reading on this list. I have never liked doing my own maintenance, but I have learned the hard way that dealers seldom follow the factory maintenance procedures. I have never met a Kawasaki mechanic that saw any need to check the valves at the 500 mile inspection interval. I bet few of them ever do it unless you are standing there watching them. My 500 mile inspection on my A15 cost me $108.00. I figure I got an oil and filter change for that money, and a record of required maintenance which will be of benefit only if I have a warranty claim. I have no doubt in my mind that they never checked the valves. Many mechanics take shortcuts anywhere they can when nobody is looking. Sometimes that is OK, but sometimes it is not. Only way to take the guesswork out of it is to learn how to do it yourself. Now, If I just had that supplemental manual......
