Did anyone on the list go? George? I am hoping to hear about the
unveiling of the new Bonnie, and the mile races.
I had planned to make my annual trip down there but just couldn't
come up with the energy, which may have been a good thing, the BMW
battery died on Saturday at home. It was four years old (this
inserted to avoid listening to BMW bashing -- I don't give a rat's
ass if you like them or not).

another first valve adjustment question....
hi ed. there is no "stock" shim that i know about. my bike came with 3 #270
and 1 #275. these are metric measurements of some sort, maybe 2.70mm and
2.75 mm, i dunno. anyway, each 5 is worth .002". unfortunately, you have to
take out the old ones to see what size is stamped on them. for example, in
your case, let's give some hypothetical stock shim numbers for your
measurements:
measurement stock shim desired clearance
new shim
L-Intake .004 270 .006(or .008)
265 (or 260)
R-Intake .005 275 .007
270
L-Exh. .005 270 .009
260
R-Exh. .006 265 .008 (or .010) 260
(or 255)
does this make sense? a smaller shim (from 270 to 265) gives more clearance
(from .004 to .006).
you may find, like in our hypothetical case, that you can re-use 1 or 2 of
the old shims. notice that the 270 and 265 you need for your new clearances
can be swiped from other valves. as far as i can tell, the shims don't wear
(oil between shim and cam), but remember your sanity check, and remeasure
the valve clearances again once you have the shims installed.
