engine oil????
Hi everyone,
just wondering what the general opinion out there is on motor oil
that I should be using in my KLR? I normally run ordinary petrolium
based oils at about $1.79/litre and have heard of people using
synthetic oil. How is everything working out with it? is it okay to
use with the clutch? I have heard that it can dry out the clutch!!
Any
info would be nice!!
thanks
Mike

I use the 20W-50 "Kawachem" sold at my local Kawasaki Motorcycle Dealer. It's recommended by the manufacturer of your bike, and thus by the engineers that designed it. I think Kawasaki knows more about the KLR then we ever will, and have a vested interest in the proper performance of your bike. If they recommend "Kawachem", that's good enough for me.

No oil thread is complete without also discussing the proper level in the sight glass on our KLR's.> I also wish some of you KLR "vets" would simply answer the damn > question.
Since you asked nicely - Catrol GTX in my Golf. Mobil 1 synthetic in my wife's Passat. Bel Ray pre-mix synthetic in the Lambretta and the weed wacker/trimmer thingy. Cheap assed 30w in the lawnmover. When I had a Vespa I used Belray synthetic injector 2 stroke in it. My KLR's front forks have Bel Ray 10wt fork oil in them. I use Bel Ray (no, I don't own Bel Ray stock, that's just what the local shop stocks) foam filter oil on my KLR's air filter. I change oils much more often than the service schedule calls for. David, there have been several impressive studies completed recently. One
was published by the BMW ON magazine the other by Motorcycle Consumer News.
They even tested my beloved Valvoline Premium Blue. I suppose many people
could view the same results and come to different conclusions. The way I saw
it....the best results came from motorcycle specific oils...Golden Spectro
to be exact. But Mobil I in any of its three formulations came out very
well. The new "tri-synthetic" version of Mobil I came out wors of the three.
So, the choice is yours....My Valvoline came out about middle of the road
along with Gino's Castrol GTX...I would suggest Mobil I in any formulation
except tri-synthetic...

I use any name-brand on sale. But, I also change my oil and filter every
1000 miles (or less), whatever lubes your piston, keep the motor clean!
Later.

I've been using the dreaded Mobil 1 tri-synthetic oil for about 3500 miles and just switched to MC specific oil (Maxum 15w-50 synthetic) to see if it made a big difference. Hard to tell just yet since I changed it yesterday and only rode with earplugs so far. But it does seem to shift a little smoother. Twice the price but might just be worth it. dat brooklyn bum> I also wish some of you KLR "vets" would simply answer the damn > question. > SIMPLY WHAT OIL DO YOU USE??? > Thanks, >
