To me, the description looks more like engine knock or ping, as my loose chain noises only surface around idle to 3000 rpm under light or no load. Anyway, for the cam chain, it's an automatic ratcheting mechanism that's less than reliable. To check it, I just periodically pull the end cap and spring off the tensioner and shove a short 1/4 drive socket extension in and listen for a "click". If I can't get it to click without painfully pressing on the extension, then the chain is tight enough.
