[dsn_klr650] countershaft sprocket questions

hmmmm.... my 89 klr has a plate that bolts on the the sprocket that fits in the groove on the shaft. it is able to move lateraly about 1/16 of an inch or so thoough.... dan --- "Seiler, Kevin" wrote:

But the Kaw retainer is junk. It is made of soft steel and the overlap isn't much over the grooves on the countershaft and they are too thin so you get the play. You need to contact Jake Jakeman at Sagebrush machine shop in Utah. He makes a better stainless steel retainer which is thicker and overlaps much better over the grooves. He also includes a washer shim set which goes between the sproket and the countershaft. When you get the right combination of shims, the sproket is on VERY tight. I don't have Jake's number handy (maybe someone else on the list does). You could check the archives for his number. I forget what he charges for the retainer and the shims. Do you mean that I'm supposed to have a plate that bolts to the countershaft sprocket- as in the one that Dan referred to? If so, I don't have that item. All I've got is an E-clip. There was a lot of other shoddy work done by previous owner on the bike, and I'm thinking he had a few left over parts that got round-filed when he did a sprocket replacement on this bike. Would also appreciate a response on the Sagebrush Machine Shop address and or phone number, as the archives give me oh, about 3,465,324 responses. BTW, am I the only one out here that finds the archives on this list pretty much close to useless?  BTW, am I the only one out here that finds the archives on this list pretty much close to useless? As a new KORG lister, I would like to thank the List for the archives, I read most of them before I bought the KLR and had most of my accessories ready to install when I picked the bike up. I wish the achives had more riding tips like how to get down a steep rocky hill, or what's the best way to travel on sand, gravel, and mud with 10/90 tires.

I have a friend of 19 years. When we were young we both worked in the same bicycle shop. Working in a bicycle shop we had access to nice tools and bicycles. We road mountain bikes to there limits on several occasions. Well, I invited him down to ride motorcycles on labour day. He started out on my KLR and I road my NightHawk 750. We had riddin about 12 miles when I asked him if he would like to Ride the NightHawk he did and we continued on. I was leading through some very twisty curves. I had warned him to take it easy through the curves. I kept checking my rear view to see how he was doing. He looked like he was doing fine. He looked like he wasn't pushing it to hard. Then it happened. After a minute or so of not seeing him in my rear view my stomach sunk. I turned around to check on him. He was in the ditch. It turns out he went into a turn to hot an went of the road. The ditch was deep and soft so it was impossible for him to control the bike. He bailed out and the bike fliped. He was fine a few scracthes was all. He was very lucky. It had rained the night before and has been a very wet summer so the ground was soft. The bike didn't do so well. the head light, turn signals, clucth lever and handlebars were bent pretty bad. Plus the gas tank was dented. You cann't image how I felt when I saw the bike in the ditch. Well luckily my friend takes resonsiblity for his actions. He offered to buy the bike on the spot. Not pay for repairs, buy the bike. Of course I agreed. I called another friend who has a truck. He came out and we loaded up the bike and delivered it. I had a check for the bike as soon as it was delivered. Moral of the story, before you let someone ride your bike you better make sure they will take responsibility. Now I just have my 88 KLR 650
