[dsn_klr650] how much does a gallon weigh?

That sounds like a crock to me Chris. Har har har. Seriously though, how do you figure that oxygen in the fuel is any different than oxygen from the air? Oxygen is oxygen when I balance combustion equations. Do you mean the oxygen in gasoline is bound to some other substance and must be broken out before entering the combustion process? Jim

The MTBE additive in California [1] gasoline and the alcohol in other oxygenated gasolines both contain less energy (per gallon) than gasoline itself. These additives "dilute" the gasoline and reduce its total energy output. Even if the mixture is adjusted to compensate for the "forced leanness" of this lousy gas, you still cannot totally compensate for the loss of energy density. RM

I live in Orem, UT and get 57 mpg out of my A7.  It's quite nice having to fill up every week for $7.50 to $8.00, as opposed to the truck I sold for this bike that I had to fill every week.  It had two 20 gallon tanks and I had to fill at least one of them every week.  It got roughly 8-10 mpg     [b]From:[/b] stingray@... BINGO! The "O" in the gas isn't "O2", but is bonded chemically in a compound, and energy must be used to break those covalent bonds before the oxygen is liberated and free to combine with the carbons in the combustion process to form carbon dioxide. Jeff

Yep, western Washington in the Puget Sound region during half of the year when the smog accumulation is the worst, and unfortunately so are the air temperature inversions, so the fumes from that oxygenated gas is even more irritating. What I really don't get, is why don't the refineries and gas companies do a better job of removing sulfur from the gas. Smell rotten eggs anyone? Jeff
