I replaced my stock chain and front sprocket at 17,000 miles on my Tengai. I went with a DID O-ring chain. At 28,000 miles, the chain is doing well, the front sprocket has some signs of wear. My rear sprocket is still the original and looks great. The chain and sprockets on my A2 have an unknown amount of mileage on them (probably a shitload), as they've been unmolested since I acquired the bike 19 months and 9,000 miles ago. Mark B2 A2

Bill- It's been a long time since I've used a original equipment KLR chain. I would change it before your trip to Idaho, it is an endless chain requiring you either cut it off or disassemble the rear of the bike to remove. I would dare to say 16,000 miles is about all you can get from that chain. Having a bad chain is about the worst thing to happen on the road, next to a bad drive shaft.I think Dan Shaw will vouch for that. BTW KLR chain is 106 links. I use DID brand. Conall-happiness is fresh chain and sprockets.

yes, i agree, get a new chain and sprocket before any long trip and put it on. you can always save the old ones to use for around town later if its not completly worn out yet, but having a chain or sprocket wear out on the road is a BIG inconvenience. its hard to find a place that has everything in stock, and it can be dangerous if you push it. for some reason my rear sprocket it always the first part to show wear and i replace it around 10,000 miles. it seems by the time you can see the teath wearing, it just starts to go really fast from there... dan --- Conall O'Brien wrote:

Story from my Yute: Had a Suzi TS400 and didn't know squat about cycle maintenance. Ran it into the ground off road. Dad kept saying to adjust the chain and check it. Trying to teach an idiot kid responsibility. I never did it. Chain broke on a hard up-hill climb. It whipped under and hit the bottom of the crank case. Broke a chunk out about the size of a silver dollar. Needless to say a 15 year old didn't have funds to fix that and dad just said "told ya so..." Can't hurt to get a new chain. Might hurt not to. what else besides wd-40 do y'all use to lube your chains? has anyone found that something works better??? i need to slap some goop on the chainoly but not sure what to use.... i think the owners manual says 90w???? whats up with that and what is 90w??????? sounds like it may slow me down!!!!!!!!!!!!!! oj

90W is what is used in rear ends of vehicles.  I've been using is and quite like it.  It is quite sticky, but it works. John A7

Hi OJ, It sounds like you are really enjoying your new KLR. As for chain maintenance, I've been cleaning mine with kerosene and lubing it with Bel-Ray chain lube about every 500 miles. My bike only has about 3500 miles on it and the chain still looks like new. Jim

My opinion is to clean with kerosene and lube with 90 wt gear oil - just like the manual says. Do this on both my bikes with good results. Richard in Tucson 94 KLR650 86 VFR750

I've used 90-weight oil, spray-on white lithium grease, chain wax, and WD-40. 90W oil is good stuff, but it takes a bit more time to apply than spray-on compounds. I'm back to white lithium grease: it lasts well, doesn't wash off, doesn't build up, and doesn't pick up much dirt. Dreas
