I find it much quieter with no windshield and a good full face helmet. With the stock windshield I got to much buffeting which is very noisy in your helmet. I experimented with windshield height and wound up with 0. If a shield could be design that would stop the buffeting of your helmet I would probably get one for long trips. I haven't found one yet. That bike was whisper-quiet but after 4 or 5 hours my ears would ring unless I wore earplugs. My helmet is an Arai full face. It's the same on the KLR- which leads me to believe it's wind noise over (and through?) the helmet. Joe Alberth

    I find that wearing ear plugs is a pretty good policy on anything except my GL1500.  Personally, I don't do well with the disposable foam ones, they irritate my ear after a long day so I had some silicone ones custom poured at a gun show, cost about $35 and I think most places that sell hearing aids do this also.  Comfortable for the whole day.

Hi Neil, I know what you mean. Your best course of action is to determine what frequency that you are losing touch with. Go to your doc and request a hearing test. You can then determine if the wind or the pipe is the culprit. Fully explain the situation to your doc. Mine when out and recorded my pipe, he was cool like that. Then we did the test and determined that it was both the wind and the pipe frequencies that I was losing. More on the pipe side for me, and yes you can quantify this test. The recommendations, since quitting racing was out, was to wear rubber earplugs, as opposed to foam. He fitted me (yes plugs need to be properly fitted) with a pair and I was all the happier. Went back at the end of the racing season and I didn't lose anymore, Yippeee! So before you go blow a whole bunch of money on new parts, think about a $10 pair of properly fitted rubber plugs. I joined the Army a short while later and they fitted me with the EXACT same plugs. I guess the Army did some research on the subject of hearing loss HUH? The Army plugs (same as my doc prescribed) were actually comfortable after you got used to them, soon you'll forget you have them in... You'll sleep better, your wife won't complain as much, you'll have fewer chores to do around the house and in time you'll even start listening (as opposed to hearing) better. See... in the Army we had to wear them all the time around the weapon systems (Air Defense - Chaparral then Avenger/Stinger) and you still had to communicate effectively. By having a hearing impairment imposed upon you it forced you to listen very carefully to instructions/orders. I know it sucks to wear plugs under your helmet, but I assure you they are less expensive than new equipment and much less of a hassle than irreversible hearing loss. LaterZ Dash HUH?
