windshield hardware?

Post by Joe Smith » Thu Jun 08, 2000 10:59 pm

Hi I just put the factory 4" taller windscreen on my KLR but was wondering about the hardware. Specifically it looks to me like reusing the stock hardware is kind of rinky dink since the shouldered nuts don't seem to fit the accessory windscreen anything like the stock one. has anyone else experienced this and come up with a better solution? I am mostly worried about a lose fit leading to a vibration crack in fairly short order. Joe S 96 KLR650

windshield hardware?

Joe, I've run my KLR with the taller screen for pretty much all of it's 3000 km with no probs. I usually go around my bike with a ratchet and screwdriver whenever I do anything else to it (wash, check and lube chain, etc) and haven't found the hardware backed off any amount. The only thing I do is reverse the nuts (large surface against the screen) and watch that I don't over-torque. One thing about the taller screen you may have already discovered, it will rub into and cut the throttle cable housings at full lock left turns. I marked the contact area on the screen and ground it away with a dremel tool to help aleviate this, and put a thick layer of electical table on the cables for extra protection. Cheers, D. GBG eh14

94 klr, what to check, how to buy

Post by Brad Davis » Fri Jun 09, 2000 2:48 pm

Hi All, This message is twofold. First, what do I check on a used KLR to make sure it is mechanically sound? How do I check wheel bearings for example, elevate the bike and rotate the wheels listening for odd sounds? Is there a checklist I need to run through prior to purchasing it? If this was a car I would know what to do, but since this is my first motorcycle I am flying blind! I hope you all have some good pointers. Secondly, I have my sights on a 94 KLR with 6600 miles. The owner says it is very reliable, and in excellent mechanical and cosmetic condition. I haven't seen it yet but might drive out to see it this weekend if you all say it is worth it. The problem is that he won't budge the price any lower than $2550. This is higher than the Retail value of $2295 but since this is a low mileage bike, maybe it is worth it? What do you all think, is this price OK for this bike? Thanks for the help with these newbie questions. Brad Davis
