It bends as it is breaking. I bought Alpinestars and couldn't "feel" the shift lever. A week ago Saturday, after some aggressive shifting, I found mine exhibiting symptoms much like those you describe above. Remembering stories from this list, I said it was breaking; my riding buddies didn't think so -- they thought it was only bending. I took it off in Blanding, Utah and it was breaking. It was 3/4 broken through at the weld. To make a long story short we got it welded and continued on but it still didn't work satisfactorily. I will replace it with an aftermarket item. Fred Hink in Moab sometimes has them in stock but if you break it on the way, you will be stranded unless you think of a temporary solution I couldn't think of. Verle Nelson Cedaredge, CO

I had Vice Grips. Have you tried Vice Grips as an emergency shift lever on a KLR650? I don't believe it can work and neither did the two "old pros" with me. Verle Nelson Cedaredge, CO

Hi Verle, No... I just figured it would. They have saved me from walking in the past on other bikes. Can have ice-cream with my pie? LaterZ Dash

Verle is right.....I don't think the vise grip would work, and nothing beats having that shifter in the saddlebags for peace of mind while traveling long distance. Anyone who has read anything about the KLR in preparation of ownership wilil be aware that the shifter is a piece of crap and will plan accordingly. BTW, vise grip is the correct term...."vice grip" is something else, perhaps something you do when you're not getting enough vice. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Come on now. With the vise grips, you shift the bike into second or even third gear, really slip the clutch to get started and up to speed, and then limp home as best as you can in your only gear. Jeff

You try it on a difficult 4WD road. I'll watch. Verle Nelson Cedaredge, CO

If you use the term "4WD road" it should be no sweat. Now if you use the term "goat trail" that might be another story. Mark B2 A2

The 1984 600A1 was kick only, all the 1985+ 600B1-9 series were electric and kick. The only practical way to get electric leg is to get a 600B. The cases were different, the alternator was different, the wiring harness was different.

Different frames. Dunno about the tanks, I've never heard of a 600 with a 650A tank.

You can find a table comparing gear ratios in the archives. As for engine specs, I'm too lazy to type them up right now. If you are really curious, you could get the base shop manual that covers the 600A and get the supplement that covers the 650A.
