chain too short?

To the Borg I'm still in mega-rebuild mode. I've had the whole rear end apart, and now, putting it back together, I'm trying to replace the chain. Got a new DID X-ring (looks COOOL!) Anyway, with the bike on centerstand, rear wheel off the floor (suspension fully extended), and the rear wheel as far forward as the chain tension adjusters allow, I can't get the master link in!! It's all to tight! What's up with this? I havent' resorted to actually counting links, is this the next step? Mike Magier 98 KLR650 GroundHog 99 ST1100ABS Sweetness
