newbie needs bike

Folks, I'm new to motorcycling and looking for something to start off on. Suggestions made to me include getting a 250cc or smaller bike, and a used dual sport to abuse to death as I learn. I will be primarily riding around the streets, going to/from classes, etc. I came upon two such bikes in my area, a '91 KLR 250 and a '92 Honda NX250. Someone had also suggested the Sherpa to me but I'm sorta poor and need to spend $$ on safety equipment too. Anyway, what are the differences between the KLR and the NX? Is one better suited for my needs than the other? How do you prevent thiefs from taking your saddle bags? Thanks in advance for any responses. -J
