I made mine on the lathe out of nylon. The stock spacer was much smaller in diameter, as it was a thin walled steel tube. I made mine 1.200" in diameter. A close fit but not tight. I think a SCH40 1" PVC would do it. Not 100% though. Perhaps 3/4". If I say something way radical then someone else will chime in that actually purchased PVC for that application. So yeah you need 6" ABS conduit and don't forget the additional 3" long whatzeldink. Cut them too long? I could see that if you cut them too short then you'd have to toss them but can't you cut them again and get a shorter length out of them? Just asking.. as I wouldn't know about these things. I keep cutting and cutting and it is still too short. Your handling could be affected if the spacers were really too long. If you are 1/4" off then I would say that it may be something else. If the spacer is too long then what you are effectively doing is reducing your travel in the soft zone of the progressive. So you'll hit the stiff zone a bit faster. We are talking about 1/4" out of what? 12" of travel. Not very significant IMO. I don't remember your negative characteristics but if it is really slow to come around and want to turn for you then perhaps raise your tubes in the clamps (~5mm?) if it is just stiff and bouncy all over the place then you may want to check that there is no air pressure and that the fluid level is correct.
