If your existing pump is in good condition and also transistorised, it's
not very likely that you will need a backup. In the thirty years that
we've been driving our J2 the pump has failed once, and that was really
my fault because I bent the spring contact instead of fixing the pump
properly!

If you're going to carry it at all, do the transistor mod, then setup
one pump to each carb and a balance pipe between the carbs.
