Hi all
ive found the driver's seat of my car and installed it,so for the first time
i sat behind the wheel of a T series, but it was not very easy to get in or
out,so could you more experienced people tell me the most efficient and
ideal way to get in and out of a TC?as i still have a few years for my car
to be on road,i want to practice and master the technique involved .
i just hope i dont have to give up beer,but i will do that too for the sake
of driving my car

G'day Awini,

I am 6'4" tall and my TC did require some surgery before I could even think
of driving a TC. I would not describe myself as fat, but as an ex rugby
player I am sure you can get the picture.

I fabricated using K-Type seats as a pattern two pre-war MG style bucket
seats. This design means you can take advantage of the space which usually
exist between the bench seat back and the diff cover. If more room is
required you can take a notch out of the rear inner guard and get another
couple of inches. I required this and my wheels do not touch. There is
also a fair bit of clearance to be gained by elongating the holes in the
under dash bracket that carries the steering column. Another thing is no to
fall for the old trick that a lot of tall long armed guys do. If using a
Brooklands steering wheel. Make sure it is adjusted so that it sits as far
OUT from the dash board as possible.... By doing this you gain a great deal
of room for long legs to be bent and and not foul the steering column when
driving........ Works for me, and Terry Sanders and Willie Williams will
testify Im no shorty........

Awini,

Yogic devotion to the problem would seem to be the most appropriate
local solution!

My old preferred method was to just step over the door and slide down
past the steering wheel, probably due to the fact that various racing cars
I have dont have doors anyway at least not on the drivers side.

This could be a problem after pub closing time if you got your foot inside
the steering wheel. Walter S...... who owned my road Connaught (no doors)
before me was once found next morning asleep in the car park of our local
pub on Dartmoor UK , outside the car, with his St Bernard dog asleep
alongside
him and his foot still inside a steering wheel! Oh happy days!!!

More practically it depends on the build of the driver, but almost all
techniques must involve some sort of swing over and slide in - I still
usually
sort of stand into the car and slide down the seat back and under the
wheel.

Well hopes that helps - cant wait to hear how a Badger hets fitted -
hopefully not by hammering himself in with a rock!

Hi, Awini!
Simple Solution:
- Open the door
- Grap with your right hand the steering-wheel
- Put your left leg under the steering-wheel and at the same time your
left hand on top of your propshaft-tunnel.
- Now take place
- Don t forget your right leg
- close the door, ready. (Out in reverse mode)

The best: It worked with tall people, too. (I m 1,92 meters).
(Maybe it s necessary to adjust your steering wheel higher und more
backwards)

Dear Mr.Gillam,
My serious enquiry might be an odd question to those of you who've been
around these delightful cars all their lives,but there are less fortunate
ones like myself and everyone who had to grow up with jap tin boxes like the
toyota corolla,why, even the jaguars of my childhood,(late seventies and the
early eighties)are pretty sad cars,you people had all the fun right upto the
MGC GT and left us the rubber bumper MGB to grow up with.i have driven pre
war cars but nothing like the T series, the closest ive driven to this shape
of a car are a 1938 Morris 8 tourer, and a post war Sunbeam-Talbot
tourer,but both feel very plain compared to the MG,so i intend to make up
for lost time as soon as my MG is roadworthy, and i also want to make sure
that i dont fall on my face in public trying to get in or out of the
car.(and a car like the MG is sure to draw a lot of public attention)and
thanks,i need all the luck i can get to restore my TC

P.S: the only"new" cars from my childhood that i like are the Audi
Quattro,VW Golf GTI MkI , the first series BMW M3,Pontiac Fiero and the Ford
Sierra Cosworth

Awini,

Smile, you sure ask the oddest questions - but sure seem to stir up the
conversations here. When I bought my TC I wondered the same thing - but I
managed to lose 30 pounds and now fit in it reasonably well.

I enter differently than most I've read in the group. I bend my left leg,
sort of lay it flat on the seat and then slide it under the steering wheel,
following with my posterior. After I straighten back up, I use my right
hand to help bend/lift my right leg into the car. As awkward as it sounds,
it's actually quite easy.

I'm at the last stages of finishing mine - it's driveable around the
neighborhood - but I still need to finish working on the bonnet and get that
painted. So far I've had it in pieces for 9 years - but it seems to have
been worth it so far.

Is it still the case that Indian law prevents the export of antique cars
and car parts? This is what I understood to be the case when I was last
in Delhi (I may have been misinformed).

Yes Art it is still illegal to export older cars and motercycles from India,
and this policy is unlikely to change.
