Was in contact with one of our newer TC members and he mentioned he had
noisy valves. Figured it was normal with .019" clearance. What does
everyone else run theirs at? If I recall, I am running .012" hot
on a 3/4 grind cam although I still have a little clatter.

.012" and .014" ought to be fine for most anything. Valve clatter is part of the breed, since the valve train is so loooong. A spiffy aluminum cover helps keep the racket down. You might want to go to .014" and .016" if you feel the idle is suffering.

A loose valve is a happy valve. Just use some caution if running the
clearance tight to avoid burning a valve.

When you say that you have a "3/4" cam, that covers lots of territory. If
it is the AEG 122 cam, then they call for .019 for racing, and .015 for
street driving. I would be a little leery of just picking .012 clearence,
unless you know the cam spec.
Do you know the make and specific grind that you have. The so called Crane
"stock" grind actually has a .357 lift and a longer duration than stock,
and is a good grind. They call for .018 INT. and .020 EX. clearence, but it
is noisy. In talking to the engineers at Crane, I was told to use .014 and
.016 clearence, and it works well. It just advances the cam somewhat, and
has caused no trouble in the last fifteen years that I have run it.

VALVE LASH
Well, chaps , it all depends what cam you have. The early XPAG runs at 19 thou, but from mid TD they run at 12 thou, cos they have different timings. Most race and fast road cams for XPAGs run at 15 thou. Too much noise from one tappet is often a sloppy or broken tappet. Noise from all rockers is wear under the rocker tip. no noise at all is valve recession from excessive use of unleaded fuel. Did you know that additives like valvemaster etc gunge up the piston rings? LRP is no good over 60 mph. Hard valve seats are the only answer. Here in the UK we are lucky , cos Leaded petrol is still available to us, from selected outlets. Enjoy the driving of these cars, and don`t worry if it has the wrong screws holding the thingimijig in place! Paddy. Derbyshire. TA 0448 and TB 0594.
