Roger,

We 'spoke' briefly at Silverstone regarding my lift off or trailing throttle
rattle and also
my need for new half shafts and hubs (traditional style) and you may remember
I
purchased two of your axle nuts as starters. Please let me know when you have
a pair available.
Regarding the rattle, if you recall I considered timing chain more on account
of noise at idle and possibly little ends. You may have seen my thrashings on
the tensioner, I have sorted that out with John Stones help. However on
removing the sump I found part of a spring washer and a small piece of piston
ring -- out came first piston.
The little end bolt was loose, had a groove round it worn by the pin which
was free to move, the rattle may be? I will now look at the others. Anybody
else out there with lift off rattle at 3500-4000 rpm, look at your little
ends, if you see what I mean.
The pistons were AE two comp two oil ring types with split skirt, it was the
first oil ring that was missing some bits, any ideas on cause, the loose end
may be? Can I
dispense with the second oil ring and use it to replace the broken one? If I
need all the rings will the std ones ie Octagon etc fit?
At last to the point, I will need new little and big end screws (plus nyloc
nuts?), can you help with these please Roger.

By the way another philosophical question - when you drive a TC with the
hood down is the engine still noisy?

Best regards
Brian Hough

Gentlemen I am embarrassed. The correct number of my car is TC 0526, not
0527. (Senior moment?) FD, would you please correct your records? Mike,
do you have any info on TC 0526? Was it a police car also?

The car was imported to the US in 1971 by a used car buyer who got into
trouble with the Customs Agency for importing too may cars for his own
"personal use". I bought the car off the impound dock, paid all duties on
it and towed it home. It had a yellow "broom" paint job, including much of
it all over the engine, fiberglass fenders on the front, no electrics wired
or working, badly dented firewall, (looked like an elephant sat on the
corner of the battery box)...... well, you get the picture. It took me 19
years to finally fully restore the car. It was in and out of the garage
many times due to other restorations and lack of parts. Moss's catalog of
TC parts was not much help in the 70's. Some time I will tell you about the
1-year fight with the State of Florida when I tried to get a Florida title
for it.
The original UK registration plates are up in the attic of the shop and I
can't get to them right now. The TC had decided to spring a leak in the gas
tank sending unit. Gas leaked down the tank stripping the paint off the
tank below the sending unit so I have it fixed and up on stands to repaint
that area. It is blocking the ladder up to the attic.
I think it is jealous of the other TC I have been working on. When I work
on my TD something always goes wrong with the TC. I'm sure it has to be
jealousy.

Once again I apologize for the goof in the number. TC 0526 is resting in my
garage.

Dave, Neil N, Neil B,

I have been trolling through the list Jim Shade sent us and relating it to
other information I have and I discovered that TC 0527 was originally a UK
police car operating with the Warwickshire Constabulary (Original UK
registration EUE 383). Did you know your car was an ex police vehicle Neil?

What is interesting however is that it looks like both TC 0524 and TC 0529
may have been police vehicles too, but this is not quite so certain and I
would need your help to confirm it? Can you Dave and Neil B tell me if you
know the original UK registrations of your vehicles and were they both used
cars when exported to the States?

If TC 0524 had the registration EUE 380 then it was definitely a police car
originally.

Equally if TC 0529 had the original registration EUE 385 then it too was a
police car in the UK before it went to the US of A.

In any event do let me know what you know of these cars, especially their
original Reg or if you are certain they were direct exports to the US. They
all look to have a very interesting story attached.

Finally something that I can offer an opinion on. I have experience in the use of rhodium for plating jewellery. It plates a very bright white, is very hard, and very expensive. The last time that I checked, over $3000.00 per oz. We calculate that we plate it to a thickness of .000002 in. to .000005 in. In order to do a good job, the reflectors would have to be finished to a very high polish, followed by copper plating, then nickel, and then a thin deposit of rhodium. This is the same process that would be followed for chrome. I have plated some small parts on my TD with rhodium. and after over 10 years, they are still holding up fine. They look just like chrome. Bottom line....It should hold up well, but I believe that chrome would be less expensive and in most cases it will be easier to find a plater to do the job Mark Evenchick

Hi all
Jan, myself & two daughters are off to stay in Canada for a year. Jan is on
teacher exchange & I'm on 'long service leave'. In just over three weeks we
fly to Vancouver & then on Boxing Day we'll wend our way to Courtenay on
Vancouver Island. Any listers in the Courtenay/Comox area?
