The old 2-stroke SAABs had such free-wheeling setups to make sure that one didn't coast for long distances with a closed throttle. Since the fuel for these cars was a petrol & oil mixture and it both powered the engine and lubricated it, a closed throttle meant no lubrication

Nothin" new. My dad had a Pierce Arrow that had a free wheeling device. He never knew it until he drove it the first few times and almost wrecked the beast. Lousy two wheel brakes on the thing about a 1920s something.
