The Chronometric operation is a clockwork comparator, comparing current
cable revolutions, with previous ones. Hence, the needle will never flow
smoothly, but will move as comparisons are made. It will be observed as
a erratic motion, but it is quite accurate. In the days before digital
electronics, many race cars were still fitted with chronometric
tachometers. These also had a second pointer needle, showing maximum rpm
achieved.

Depends on the road surface, how many spokes are broke in the rear wheels,
whether the balance weights have flown off one or more wheels, how many flat
spots you put on the tires from panic stops when the idiot with disk brakes
ahead of you slammed on his brakes, and how many pubs you stopped at along
the way.

Factor all of this out and the tach should rise smoothly.

...Thanks John for the explanation...I`ve often wondered how they actually worked...but yes Elov, it is quite normal for the needle to move in `clicks`...or jump/skip. Mine on TC 2259 is a bit temperamental at the moment and makes the most awful noise at times...so much so that on a recent trip round the Emerald Isle I actually disconnected it...

Mr. Kelsey says it "skips" and Mr. Grunau says it "bobs". Near as I can tell, both are correct although according to the Moss seat and interior people mine has temporarily "dyed".
