Break in?

Recently I lost my transmission... well I really didn't loose it, it was bolted onto the rear of the engine all the time. What happended was that it jammed in gear after munching second gear and the cluster gear. I got lots of input from the list on wheter to buy a 5 speed conversion, or repair the current tranny. The 5 speed was touted by about 50% of the corresponders, but it is available with a Ford Sierra unit common in Europe but even more rare here in the US than original TC trannies. A fellow bac east used to make a Datsun conversion, but alas no longer does that. I could engineer my own conversion. Fortunately a fellow lister, Gerry Webber, had a spare box which he sold me. I used all of that tranny except I grafted in my shifting forks as they were a bit better. Tonight I went for a ride and the car is again whole. I have a few small issues to handle however. While the engine was out I had a frame shop straighten the frame... I showed them how to get the car on and off the trailer without damage. They shook their heads and said "ok". When they were done they ended up ruining the valence in the front which covers the dumb irons and then they forgot how to load the trailer and smashed my master cylinder beyond repair. ARGGGGHHH!!! I now have another mc on there but it just doesn't work as well as I want it to... may have to go with a VW unit now. When I got my car about 6 months ago my first post was about the tranny making a grinding noise while coming out of 1st and when going in to 2nd. I think the problem was that second gear was buggered up, eventually failing. The "new" tranny is older than mine, and it shifts much quieter. Both run quiet. So several folks asked to have me keeep them posted on progress. I had originally planned to start my vacation trip right after work today. Later this evening I got the car going and did my first test drive. I need to do some tweaking on the brakes but that is minor, it seems ready for that drive. I just cannot psyche myself to jump into the car and run a 1,000 mile trip to test out a new tranny. That is asking for problems, one fellow said I should break in the tranny... don't know how to do that other than to just drive gently for a while. So I guess the trip is off for this weekend and I will do some shorter drives around town here to get the feel of the car again. Unfortunately because of the body damage I am now thinking it is time to do that re-paint. The car came black/green from the factory and is now Ivory/black. I am thinking Green/black but my wife likes it as it is. So I have some deciding to do about that. I would post a photo of the car as it now is, but the camera just died. Thanks all for your help. Btw the "replacement engine" square id tag "fell off of my engine while I had the engine out of the car... anyone need an interesting tag like that? Cheers, Terry TC2285

Unless it's a new transmission, I don't think it needs to be broken in. Are there lots of new parts in it? That is what I thought. I kept all the same gears in mesh so it is all a used tranny. I was going to swap the parts around but decided to keep it all together. Interesting is that the bearing on the input shaft made some noise when you spin it by hand. I was going to replace that but then I went to my old unit and it made the same clacking noise. My original tranny had run silently and had no problem so since this one seemed the same and didn't seem to have any play in it I just used it as is. It runs quietly and seems to have no problem with oil in there. Terry TC2285
