Hello, all T-ABCers - I'm the mystery man that everyone seems to be trying to contact. I'm delighted that so many MG people seem to have seen Rally of the Relics in Hemispheres and overwhelmed by the responses I've gotten from all over the world. The article is going to be on the TC Motoring Guild website and has now been reprinted by ARR in their newsletter. I told Jim Shade that I'd be delighted to have them reprint it but that Hemispheres should be contacted since they have "first serial rightsw" for 90 days. It shouldn't be a problem since it's a non-commercial publication. Subsequent emails I've gotten copies of indicate that they have done this. If any of you want to contact me directly, I'm at stanuys@earthlink.net and stancambria@thegrid.net. I'd be delighted to hear from you. I've been on the T-ABC since its inception but haven't written in because I don't have much to add about viscosity indices or gear ratios - but I read the messages regularly. I've written a lot of articles for Hemispheres over the years and I noticed that someone found some of them on the web. None, however are about cars until this one. August 2005 14:43 The recent thread on the use of Model T Ford or Volkswagen steering gear grease in the Bishop Cam gearbox reminded me of an obscure bit of technical data I had squirreled away somewhere. I finally found it. To most people "grease" means common chassis grease, which is meant to stay in place and not flow much, if at all. This makes it unsuitable for use in a steering box because it can't flow around and into the parts that need to be lubricated. Grease is classified by the National Lubricating Grease Institute (NLGI) according to its fluidity, similar to how motor oil and gear oil are given SAE viscosity ratings: NLGI Consistency At Number Room Temperature ------ ---------------- 000 very fluid 00 fluid 0 semi-fluid 1 very soft 2 soft 3 medium hard 4 hard 5 very hard 6 extremely hard Chassis grease normally has a NLGI-3 rating. The Model T and Volkswagen steering gear greases are probably NLGI-0, or maybe even 00 or 000. You may or may not find that information on the container. NLGI-0 grease, often called "zero grease", is a good choice for the Bishop Cam box. It's much thicker than SAE 140 gear oil, so is less likely to leak out, but it is fluid enough to flow into everything in the box that needs lubrication. You're not likely to find zero grease at your local auto supply store. Zero grease is widely used in industrial and agricultural equipment, so try suppliers that specialize in those markets. The NLGI is a US organization. I don't know if the NLGI rating system is used outside the US. -- Chip Old 1948 M.G. They are nice BUT, I wan't impressed with the way they fitted. I had to do a LOT of trimming. For the money, I'd go with MOSS. I had also purchased a set of Leather Seats Covers for my TC from Heritage. At that tinme they had told me that there were complete instructions on their website. But, they also tried to convince me to send my seat to them and have them do the work. After purchasing them I went on their website to look at these instructions (They give you a code in order to do so once you purchase the item). There wasn't any! After finally getting through to them (I had to threaten to send the covers back), they admitted that they had never instealled a set of MG-TC seats before! Luckily for me I have experience in Leather work! They didn't have a Dart in the Seat Squad cover and there was a lot of rework to get them to fit correctly. And, they boast that they are made in UK with Connolly Hides. That issue I have with them when I opened the box and there was paper label "Made in Canada". I wrote an article on installing the covers, complete with pictures and it was published in the British Marque Car Club News a few years back.
