Steering Box Grease

The recent thread on the use of Model T Ford or Volkswagen steering gear
grease in the Bishop Cam gearbox reminded me of an obscure bit of
technical data I had squirreled away somewhere. I finally found it.
To most people "grease" means common chassis grease, which is meant to
stay in place and not flow much, if at all. This makes it unsuitable for
use in a steering box because it can't flow around and into the parts that
need to be lubricated. Grease is classified by the National Lubricating
Grease Institute (NLGI) according to its fluidity, similar to how motor
oil and gear oil are given SAE viscosity ratings:
NLGI Consistency At
Number Room Temperature
------ ----------------
000 very fluid
00 fluid
0 semi-fluid
1 very soft
2 soft
3 medium hard
4 hard
5 very hard
6 extremely hard
Chassis grease normally has a NLGI-3 rating. The Model T and Volkswagen
steering gear greases are probably NLGI-0, or maybe even 00 or 000. You
may or may not find that information on the container.
NLGI-0 grease, often called "zero grease", is a good choice for the Bishop
Cam box. It's much thicker than SAE 140 gear oil, so is less likely to
leak out, but it is fluid enough to flow into everything in the box that
needs lubrication.
You're not likely to find zero grease at your local auto supply store.
Zero grease is widely used in industrial and agricultural equipment, so
try suppliers that specialize in those markets.
The NLGI is a US organization. I don't know if the NLGI rating system is
used outside the US.

Dear Chip Old,
Now you explained about the about the consistency of grease.
Can you please explain the new colour code and other specification. Few
months back a friend of mine gave three or four different type modern
grease. One is silicon free, cream colour. The other is blue in colour. I
did not want to mix up this old TC grease.
Thank you in advance.

Madhu,
Oh God (or Gods) !
Don't say we now need an originality debate about
the colour of grease
Were there Factory grease colour charts ???
I seem to remember an Abingdon shop that sold
greasy chips........I

Hi Clive,
Just like modern synthetic oil used in modern cars, new synthetic
grease is also in the market. And they do have different colour according to
the specification. I did not want to talk about originality.
We can not use these grease in our TC any way, unless and otherwise we
remove all old grease and clean the parts. But it is interesting to know the
new developments.
The new lead free fuel is so aggressive against all the old rubber pipes.
The rubber particle got into the carburettor jets and give me problem in my
motorcycle. This can also happen to old cars. One had to replace with
silicon pipes.
Did you buy fish and MG shaped greasy chips in Abingdon ??? How does it
taste ????

I hope there's no SILICON in the cream color grease, but SILICONE probably would make it a little more slippery.

Madhu,
I'm not aware of any color coding for grease that is agreed on
industry-wide.

All I used in my BC box was a mixture of grease and 140 grade oil. worked
well and cheap and easy to mix up.
