oil pump/block gasket & torgue

Post by phinchcl » Thu Aug 11, 2005 10:37 am

I am a new owner of my 48 TC since Feb 05. I am showing a spray of oil on the inside of the TC bonnet around the generator bubble, and around the oil pump casing. I can not see any specific location where the oil may be coming from, no obvious leak. I degreased the motor and under carriage and took the TC out for a 4 mile 60 mph run and again had oil "wetting" on the oil pump casing and nearby areas. The remainder of the block, the head gasket and lower oil pan were all dry. My oil pressure has been reading about 60 lbs at 60 mph, 40 at idle, and have not noticed a significant drop in my oil level. I'm thinking that my leak may be the oil pump/block gasket. I have not removed the oil pump casing before and am open to any helpful hints, precautions or comments. I understand the torque on the bolts should be 6 ft-lbs. Thanks in advance, Paul Hinchcliffe 48 TC

You might want to careully investigate the integrity of the tube that connects the oil pump to the oil filter. If a PO has bent this pipe when changing the filter, it may have a hairline crack. If the leakage is greatest when driving at high speeds, this is an indication of this fault. -Rick, TC 7881 phinchcl phinchcliffe@comcast.net> wrote: I am a new owner of my 48 TC since Feb 05. Check the pipes to the oil filter assembly Phil. They can crack with age. I would have thought that with such a healthy oil pressure that this leak could be seen at idle with your head under the bonnet - watch for the fanbelt and pulleys though, at least one of our members has had a painful meeting with them. If you need to remove the oil pump it is not an easy task as it goes in a long way and I seem to remember it cannot be removed without hitting the chassis or lifting the whole engine enough to find clearance. I believe that there is also no gasket where you mentioned, or under the top plate. Oh, and watch out for those long fixing bolts they shear if you just look at them. Good luck.
