TC steering box leak
I have rebuilt the BC box on the TC added a Bob Grunau Thompkins kit, new peg, new sector shaft seal, bearings etc. After much fiddling, I got the endplay set nicely. Now, after the thing has sat for 6 months in the chassis, Just when I am about to finish assembling the front end and start this car for the first time in 10 years, it decides to leak from the end cap. Question is: can I dispense with the gasket and use Yamabond or some such thing, or will lack of a gasket screw up the end float?

Re: TC steering box leak
I think you first need to answer another question: Why is it leaking? Have you tried re-tightening the bolts that hold the end plate on the box? Did you use any gasket compound?
Simply removing the gasket will upset the end play.

Re: TC steering box leak
Larry,
There is no gasket on either the end cap or top cover, only metal shims. A
thin smear of gasket sealant between each shim should solve the problem. Of
course the end cap and box body must be perfectly flat and clean.

Have any of you fellows tried that Penrite gear box oil yet, it flows like
vasoline but is still an oil, we have used it in Healey steering boxes, it is
out of Australia but Moss USA has it.

Joe, I have it in my TA, the SA and in the NA......tough to install.... must spoon it in....heating helps but it reduces leakage to a minimun.

Re: TC steering box leak
Joe, I've been using it in my TC for several years. Seems to be working fine. Used to have to refill it with 140wt at least a couple of times a year.

Re: TC steering box leak
You can buy the steering box oil/grease at Volkswagen. The old beetle used
it in the steering box. Model T Fords used the stuff, too. Easy to get.
Best,
Ray

With due to respect to my good buddy Ray, the Model T stuff is 600 w oil and does not stay in your box as well as the Penrite stuff does. Penrite is available in the USA from http://info@restorationstuff.com/ I think Moss has it too at a high price.

Agreed, the T stuff is last choice. The VW stuff works great, though!
