Ladies and Gents,
I have a good second-hand mainshaft from an early TD gearbox to replace the damaged one from my TF. (Sorry this is not strictly a tabc question)
The replacement is missing the keyway for the speedo drive but more importantly also the indent that allows the ball in the 3/4th sliding hub to locate this hub centrally on the splines. As this modification was made early in the life of the box I guess the tendency of the hub to float between the two cones was causing excessive wear of the brass synchromesh rings. I don't therefore want to use the shaft as it is.
So can anyone recommend a person or company in the UK with the expertise necessary to drill or otherwise machine the exceptionally hard surface of the shaft?
regards, Keith Douglas.

Re: gearbox mainshaft
Keith,
Brian Cherrington at BM Auto Equipment Ltd offers a gearbox rebuilding
service for the Riley RM models, so he might well be able to help.
Contact phone/fax is 0121 308 2354 or mobile 07973 749 608.
Alternatively, I have always found Barrie Dean (Triple-M man) to be very
helpful, with lots of contacts. Tel: 0115 920 8416 - mention my name and
he'll charge you twice as much!
By the way, have you got the video on rebuilding the TD/TF Gearbox
featuring T Register Technical Adviser Barrie Jones (obtainable from me
at 15 plus 1 postage) and Barrie's new book entitled "Barrie's Notes"
and sub titled "Maintaining a 1955 MG TF in the 21st Century"
(obtainable from me at 6 plus 1 postage)? The book is full of
technical information, including a section on strip down and rebuild of
the gearbox.
Best Wishes,
JOHN JAMES (TC0750)
