AW: [mg-tabc] Gearbox mounting

Post by Paroor » Sun Jul 10, 2005 10:38 pm

Dear Thom, One side of the gear box you got easy access to the dismantle the bolts than the other side. Now on the naked chassis it looks all easy. Some people do not give any importance for the length and dia. of bots. Main thing it is fastened and the car is road worthy. In a normal work shop where they make a living out of the repairing cars, they do not have time to organise the correct replacement bots and nuts. But we pay lot of attention for minute details like this. I do not see any other reason. May be I am wrong. I am finally done scraping, cleaning, painting and disassembling. Now I am into the re-construction phase. When I measured the frame diagonals they were within 1/8 of an inch! Now the question......I'm looking at the rear of the gearbox and can see that the mounts fit in two different ways, the right side takes 2 (12 mm?) bolts and nuts about 40 mm long and the left side takes 2 (10 mm?) bolts about 20 to 25 mm long. My problem is that, on the left side, there is a bolt head, one of the ones that secures the rear of the gearbox, right where the mount goes. What am I missing here? Does anyone have a picture of the rear of their gearbox. I know a few of you are changing to the five speed setup. Hi Thom, The cast ali rear cover is secured to the gearbox casing by a series of studs and nuts, except for one. This odd one is just inboard of the leftmost mounting block bolthole. If thats the one you mean, it should be a pan head screw, which sits in a recess in the ali casting, thus clearing the rubber/steel mounting block. Hope this helps. Thanks to everyone who responded to my question. Mark has hit the nail on the head, so to speak. Regards, Tom TC 2850, disassembeled [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
