Stripped bolt

Post by morgar49 » Wed Jun 22, 2005 1:35 pm

On the TD that I own, the threads on the engine block are stripped where one of the bolts mount the water pump to the engine. My question to the group - is it better to drill & tap to the next larger size bolt or use a helicoil? Any expierience/advise would be appreciated. Thanks, Dave Osborn TD 6551 TC 10217

Dave, I had the exact same problem with my TD about 25 years ago. I don't know if they had helicoil back then or if I simply wasn't aware of it, but I tapped it out to 10 mm. It solved the problem. But if it happened to me today, I'm sure I'd opt for the helicoil solution! David TC 3896 Bad Soden, Germany [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Dave, No question in my mind, do it right, use a Helicoil, 8.0 x 1.0 MM Metric fine thread. These kits are readily available at good fastener stores. Now you can also repair all those stripped holes in the bell housing and timing chain cover using the correct Helicoil inserts. Before I would drill and tap to the next size, I would use 8.0 x 1.25 mm standard metric thread , or 5/16"- NF helicoil. These are bastard sizes for the XPAG but better than tapping to the next sizes. Remember there is not a lot of room under the water pump and the next size nut will be harder to get a wrench onto, especially if its the bolt holding the engine steady bracket.
