Re: REMOVING AND REPLACING THE CORE PLUG AT THE REAR OF THE ENGINE
Hi Jerry
Probably can pry it out using a screwdriver, after putting a hole in it
with a pick, or long small drift/punch. Go to a parts store and get an
expandable plug (rubber with a nut you turn to expand/tighten) and
replace it the next time you have the engine out. Good Luck Dean

Subject: [mg-tabc] REMOVING AND REPLACING THE CORE PLUG AT THE REAR OF
THE ENGINE BLO
I thought that you experienced guys out there may be able to help me
resolve
a conundrum.
What is the easiest way to remove the core plug from the rear of the
block
without removing the engine?
Having achieved this what is the most straightforward way to fit a new
plug,
again without removing the block?
Your advice would be welcomed please.
Sincerely
Jerry Birkbeck

Re: REMOVING AND REPLACING THE CORE PLUG AT THE REAR OF THE ENGINE
Jerry,
I don't know if it is the easiest way but I took a long screwdriver and fed
it through the hole where the wiring loom goes through the scuttle as it
lines up with the core plug. Use a medium size screwdriver (with long
shaft) and hammer through the plug. Once you have a hole in it you can use
a shorter screwdriver to pry the plug out from the engine side of the
scuttle.
The easiest way to replace the plug is to use one of the expandable rubber
type. Not that noticeable since it is at the back of the engine.
If you insist on a steel plug I successfully got one in by fitting a long
1/4" rod (or as large as will fit) through the same wiring loom hole (you
may have to work the rubber grommet out of the way). Place a flat metal
plate, 1/4" in thickness and slightly less in diameter than plug, against
the plug. Now hammer the rod from inside the scuttle, which pushes the
plate, which flattens the core plug out to expand it in place.
