This is a general note to T-ABC members. I try to provide a good service to our members at a reasonable cost. One of the things that screws this up is the parts crossing the Canadian/USA border into Canada. If the sender simply mails/Fedex/UPS/etc ships the parts with a declared value and no other explanation, it is almost a certainty that I , and ultimately the sendor, will have to pay 15% Cdn tax on the value and possibly a $50.00 UPS etc "customs brokerage" charge before the article is delivered to me. Nobody likes to pay these extra charges. And forget trying to get the money back from the Government/UPS etc, its just not worth the time or effort required and even if successful, can take 6 months to a year. So in order to avoid these taxes/charges, PLEASE contact me before sending the used parts. When you do, I will advise you to use the following wording to try to avoid the taxes/charges : " USED PERSONAL 1945-49 MG TC antique auto parts for inspection, repair and return to owner, NO COMMERCIAL VALUE". Do NOT indicate a value. If you insist on insuring the parcel, please make a note " $---- value for insurance purposes only". This message is primarily for TA/TC steering knuckles which I can repair but need your old parts to install new inserts. I agree with Bob. I would suggest though to try and avoid the likes of UPS, Fedex,etc. when shipping cross border. If possible use the post.Recently got some parts from Australia shipped by Fedex, gave them the tarrif item number under which there is no duty. They ignored it and charged duty using a different classification. If Canada Post makes such an error you get your money back including the customs fee of $5.00, at least I always have. I was fortunate enough to have my Canadian friend transport my used steering knuckles to Canada and mail them within Canada to Bob. Luckily customs was more interested in the used china cabinet in the back of the mini van and apparently didn't care too much about old car parts. Bob's spindles are wonderful and he is a very helpful guy to deal with (in case you haven't noticed from his great responses on this list). Bob, thanks for your rotation advice on my hub bearing retaining nut. Both came off successfully today (once I knew the correct direction).
