Coming to the UK

Post by Carl Fritz » Mon May 23, 2005 7:07 pm

Listers in the UK, My wife Kate and I are in the throes of preparing for a 3-month stay in the UK starting May28. We will be based at 178 Jackman Close in Abingdon. We will have our laptop with us, so we can be reached by our usual e-mail address of carlmgtc@hotmail.com . We would greatly appreciate any suggestions, help, or contacts anyone can offer on any of the following: A. Dates & locations of events / attractions that would be of particular interest to Kate, who is especially attracted to gardens. B. Dates & locations of car meets / shows that would be of particular interest to someone who is especially attracted to MGs built before 1950. C. Information on "breakers" yards that are likely to have pre-1950 MGs in their inventory. If all goes well, you can expect to see Kate and me at the MG meet at Silverstone, the SVW meet, and as many other MG meets as we can find & reach. Thanks in advance for any help or advice!!! Carl You will be very close to Hidcote Manor Garden, one of the most influential gardens in England and a total delight, also immediately adjacent are Kiftsgate Gardens. Visit the National Trust website - www.nationaltrust.org.uk/hidcote There are plenty of local MG meets which are well advertised in the usual magazines and websites The MG Octagon Car Club catering for pre 1954 MGs see - mgoctagoncarclub.com I don't think you will find any pre 1950 MGs in our breakers yards but there are quite a few specialists dotted around the place so I'm sure you will get to know the contacts quite quickly. Best wishes for your trip, I hope we shall meet up. Regards Tony TC9825 (located in Birmingham)

Hello Carl, I suggest you contact the Secretary of the Abingdon Works Centre (AWC) of the MG Car Club (Richard Martin on 529331) when you get over here. Richard lives in Abingdon so will be "just around the corner" to where you are staying. An event not to be missed is their Summer Day Out at Highclere Castle on 19th June. Also of interest is an event at Blenheim Palace(birthplace of Churchill)on 14th August to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of VJ Day. This will feature a flying display by the Red Arrows and a Swing Concert with 'The Glenn Miller Orchestra'. Lots of participants will be coming along in WW2 dress. This event is not organised by the AWC but John Venables of the AWC (VA, TF, MGB and 18/80 owner) will be attending this event and will be happy to give you details when you are over here. You are more than welcome to come and lend a hand on the T Register stall at Silverstone where you will meet lots of enthusiastic T-Type owners. You might like to contact me (0117 986 4224) when you arrive in the UK. Another event which might be of interest is the T Register T Party at Shuttleworth on 3rd July. Graham Brown on 01234 358729 is he man to contact. At present we have 40 T-Types for this event (which features a vintage flying display). There are so many events that I cannot possibly list them all, but I strongly recommend that your first point of contact is with the Abingdon Works Centre.
