Squeaky engine

Today I cranked up my freshly rebuilt XPAG engine. Engine ran smoothly for
two or three minutes and then I began to notice squeaky sound similar to
someone bouncing up and down on old bedsprings coming from the engine. Shut down
engine to investigate. Plenty of oil coming out of the rocker assembly and
around the rockers. Good oil pressure, 70 pounds. Further investigation
revealed that the noise only reveals itself with the spark plugs in the engine.
With the spark plugs out of the engine and turning the engine over with the
starter, there is no squeaking noise. With the spark plugs installed in the
engine and the engine turned over by way of the starter, the squeaking
returns. The noise sounds like it is coming from the upper end of the engine,
specifically the rocker assembly. I have disassembled the rocker assembly, and
inspected and found no sign of galling or other damage. The new rocker bushes
are not a particular tight fit, easily slide on and off the new rocker
shaft, no pressure required. Other possiblity, sound could be coming from a too
tight valve guide, possiblly, have not pulled head yet to investigate. Or
noise could be coming from some other area of the engine. Does not not appear
to be a pulley noise or belt oriented noise. Has anyone had similar
experience? Or have any suggestions? All parts in engine are new and/or re-machined.
Thanks for any help you can give.

Dear Charlie,
I know putting such questions to you is a sin.
Are you sure you have the proper spark plug ?
Did you mix up with 1/2" and 3/4" ?
Cylinder head 22952 got 1/2" plugs.
cylinder head 188422 got 3/4" plugs.
Did you conduct a compression test ?

Hi, how about removing all but one of the spark plugs and see if the
squeaking persists? Then try the same thing with all the other cylinders.
I would guess it is a leaky head gasket since most of the other parts of the
engine don't really care if there is compression or not.

Hi Charlie,
Could the noise be due to a tight gudgeon pin in a piston? The force
on the piston, from compressing air in the cylinder may, increase any
friction, thus increasing the sound when the spark plug is installed.
As suggested by Hugh, remove one spark plug at a time to locate source.
Regards, Eric.

Charlie,
Chain tensioner? If its not getting lubrication, it could be the culprit.
Try the stethoscope trick to locate the sound.

Interesting problem... One quick suggestion. Put a dab of lubricant on the
distributor points where it rubs against the cam. I have had this problem and it
sounds like it is coming from somewhere else.

Charlie warm up the engine than remove the fan belt and run the engine for a
few minutes ( don't over heat), I have a TR4 in shop with similar wide belt
and it is new and you would think it was a door with rusty hinges.

hello group, tore into squeaky engine today, cylinders look good so far.
found troubles at rear main .rear portion of main cap housing making serious
contact with groved portion of arkemedies screw. scraper also touching on one
side. what should these clearances be? how big is a molecule of oil? first
considered removing some material from the archemedies screw to get main cap
clearance and remove scraper and replace scraper with moss type seal but then
worried that i might be just masking otherwise serious symtoms. put dial
indicator on rear main journal and the centre main journal . found small run out
areas of .003to. 004. indicating a need for futher investigation. will remove
crank in the morning and check in a v block. crank bent? block needing line
boring? the day was not without its bright spot though. i caught the neighbors
dog hiking his leg on my dogwood tree this morning and hit him dead center
from 15 feet with #3 lifter. i guarentee that mut will hereafter squat and
hopefully in his on yard. thanks for all of your kind suggestions and feedback. i
will perservere, maybe, charlie

What a freakin' grinch that Charlie must be! Wonder if he'd whack his wife
