Rear axle allignment

Post by Stew Koesten » Tue May 17, 2005 6:19 am

Dear all: I've recently finished replacing rear springs and rear hub bearings. Sure wish I had marked the axle position first. I could measure from the rear spring, front mounting pin but I don't know what the correct position is. Does anyone have measurements for the positioning of the rear axle from some point on the chassis? How many squirts of grease should be given to the rear hubs? Thanks in advance. Stew, Nobody has replied yet, so let me have a go as long as I understand your question. Each spring leaf has a dimple, indented above and protuding below, which key each leaf together. The top keeper plate has a protuding dimple on its underside to mate with the indentation in the top leaf, and a cylidrical protusion above which keys to a hole in the axle support bracket. You put that keeper plate onto the spring first with two countersunk screws going down into the bottom damper bracket. Therefore, there is only one correct location. I presume you have that top keeper plate and are not trying to bolt the axle directly to the top leaf. The way you phrase your question implies you might be missing it. The front axle is the located the same way. Good luck, Peter Ross TC 8892 Bolton, Massachusetts

AW: [mg-tabc] Rear axle allignment

Dear Stew, I was not able to understand your problem properly. The front part of rear springs carrying the silent bush goes into the shaft. The rear part is fixed with the upper shackle pin. In the normal case without load the upper shackle pin will be in line with the round chassis cross member. The shock absorber bracket is fixed to the bottom of the spring set. In the original set up, the s.brakcket have two sinkings to accommodate the mounts of the original springs. All the spring leaves have this mounts below and sinking on the top. This arrangement will help you to assemble the spring in the proper position. So in normal case you can not do many mistakes unless some one replaced the original spring leaves. The rear spring are held together with "U" clamps. They use a bolt below. But In the front spring sets the "U" clamps are bent to hold the spring set. You can shift the rear axle position to the back few mm to accommodate a 500-19 tyre. The limit of shifting is the axle touching cross member carrying the brake hose bracket. Very often it is difficult to remove and fix 500-19 tyre with out touching the mudguard edges. Take some catalogues and see the pictures of the spring assembly. It will give you more information. Hope I did not confuse you. best regards Madhu -----Urspr ngliche Nachricht----- Von: mg-tabc@yahoogroups.com [mailto:mg-tabc@yahoogroups.com]Im Auftrag von Stew Koesten Gesendet: Dienstag, 17.
