Running without a generator!!!

Dear all, How long (or how far) can I drive my T type (TB with XPAG) without the generator working? Lets assume I have a fully charged battery and start it on the starter once but don't turn it of again until it stops! This is a serious question as I have a dud generator at the moment but until I get it repaired I want to be able to attend 'nearby' events. To return I will have a warm engine and it will start with the handle first time unless the engine is cold. About 5 or 6 years ago about a dozen MG Ts drove from Vancouver to Monteray in CA for a GOF-about 1250 miles. One in the group had just bought a TD and this was their first run. The generator failed the first day. The solution was to switch a battery with another TD every day and the TD without a generator would run all day on that battery- about 350-400 miles. See: http://www.batterytender.com/ They are microprocessor controlled and take in to consideration the 4 stages of charging that batteries need. Some chargers can ruin a battery over time. Mike; I just got done fixing my MG-TC charging system problems. One major lesson learned was NEVER NEVER turn on your headlights. Maybe 20-23 miles before the battery is drained. More importantly is an unsolicited recommendation for Jerry Felper. One of the good things to come out of my experience with Lucas electrical problems was to meet Jerry Felper (felperg@earthlink.net) British Auto Electric, 2722 E. Carnival Ave., Anaheim, CA 92806. For less money than the cost of shipping, he checked out my generator and was able to tell me that my problem was with the wiring, not the generator. He had earlier checked out my regulator and made minor repairs and adjustments. In my case, the major fault was the grounding wire on terminal E compounded by a major case of stupid/inexperience (whole different nightmare). From experience, the TB will run about 5 hours in daylight, then about 1 hour in darkness with the windshield wipers and headlights on, while dodging large trucks on the highway! Then it will die as it limps into your driveway! Best, Ray "Morology is our profession, our ONLY profession!"

Mike it is not good to run around with a bum generator, why not buy a Moss MGTD generator which will work and you will have a tach ( and sell later) , or buy a MGB/MGA unit which will work and have no tach, better to have a battery charging and you don't have to worry about getting home before dark.
