TC clatter

Last summer I tuned up my TC, and checked the valve settings. With the cam that I have 0.012 is the setting I use. The head is milled .085 inches. Since before I put it away for the winter, and now when the weather is fine, when idling the engine it sounds like an old tractor, clattering away. When driving and shifting gears up or down, and the RPM falls below 1500 the clatter appears. When I increase the RPM to above about 1500 the clatter disapears, and it runs beautifully. This weekend I have some time to recheck the valve settings and tighten nuts etc. Any other suggestions as to what may be causing the low RPM clatter? Thanks for your help. Gene, Dave has a good idea here about listening to where the noise is coming from. Use a 3 foot length of plastic tubing with one end to your ear and move the other end over different parts of the engine. Where is the noise loudest? To add to Gene's description (he called me last night) he said that the clatter goes away above 1500 rpm and engine being hot or cold makes no difference. If you suspect rod bearings, grounding out each cylinder plug and if the noise reduces you can suspect that cylinder rod. Gene- The clatter may very well be coming from an unsuspected source. The last few months I went through this very diagnosis. What's frustrating is that it sounds like valves that need to be adjusted or are not getting enough lubrication. Here's what it could be...check to see if you have a clutch return spring between the clutch lever and the bracket on the starter. Hi Gene, it could be a timing chain tensioner rattle. I don't think it is the valve setting since the rattle only occurs at low RPM. A bad con rod bearing would make a rattle just as you take your foot off the gas. Hugh Pite

Gene, the rattle is probably coming from the timing chain slapping the cover. Check by taking off fan belt ( to eliminat water pump) use a long screwdriver as stethescope to the cover. Kevin Brinkerhoff

Hello everyone!!!! My TC was doing the same thing! Turned out it was the GENERATOR! Bushing and Bearing were shot! Things banging around in there! I never knew a Generator could make that type of noise. I changed the waterpump first, but was not the problem. Sounded like a waterpump going out. Jerry Felper fixed me up! (British Auto Electric) Now TC 6551 runs quiet..... Well sort of....
