Propellor shaft spline

Recently, I replaced the universal joints in my propellor shaft. At the same time I had the propellor shaft checked for balance. This did not eliminate an annoying vibration at about 3,700 RPM in top gear. The wheels had previously been straightened & tyres balanced & new wheel bearings fitted, front & rear with new front hubs, so I was fairly sure that wheels weren't causing the problem. The man who checked the propellor shaft balance, an oldtimer like me, came up with the comment that the vibration could be caused by a worn spline. He said that in his experience with MGs, if the spline is not noticeably worn, cleaning & then pumping in grease until it oozes out, will normally solve the problem (in 90% of cases). I thought "Oh Yeah", but tried it. It seems to have worked! Mind you, 4000 RPM in top gear was as fast as I was game to go around the area where I live, so I'll have to wait until I get on a motorway before I am sure. Has anyone experience with worn propellor shaft splines? Ken. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

I had a prop shaft that was worn so I replaced it with a good used one from Abingdon spares. But prop shafts turn with the rear wheels, not the engine so rotation is relative to speed, not RPM's. Mine had noticeable play at the spline at the transmission tailshaft, probably about .010". Hi David, Thanks for your comments. The Clutch seems OK. as no undue vibration in 1st., 2nd. & 3rd. gears up to 4,500 RPM. The sort of vibration I was experiencing made me think I had double vision when looking at the instruments! I hope the cure persists, but it is still hard to believe. Regards, Ken [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Just a small (but perhaps important point)but are you sure that the propshaft is correctly oriented? Both U/Js should be in the same plane otherwise it vibrates. Ian Thomson. --------- --- Kenneth Jones jonesks@optusnet.com.au> wrote:

Dear Ian Thomson, How can you do that ? Is there many possibilities to fix the original propshaft ? Terry Mate...! Great story... I could mimic it several times but I won't steal your thunder on this one. I eagerly await the next instalment! The U/J yokes at either end of the propshaft must line up with one another otherwise the inherent non-linearity of the two hooke's joints will be out of phase and cause vibration. At least that's the way I understand it. Ian Thomson --- --- Paroor paroor@t-online.de> wrote:

Anyone who has ever removed a XJ6 driveshaft knows how important this step really can be!! Best, Ray "Morology is our profession, our ONLY profession!"

Hi Ian, I believe you are correct. The universal joints are not of the constant velocity type, and the front joint introduces a modulation to the speed of the propellor shaft. This modulation is reversed by the rear joint, resulting in the restoration of a smooth angular velocity due to the cancellation effect. If, as you say, the joints are not in line, then an incomplete cancellation takes place, resulting in vibrations. I've come across quite a few propellor shafts that have been dismantled and incorrectly re-assembled, and yet no mention is made of this potential problem in the various service books. What is strange, is the recommendation that the flanges on the propellor shaft and the diff. and gearbox should be marked to ensure they are re-assembled in the same orientation. Can any one explain that advice? Regards, Eric. -----Original Message----------------------------------- The U/J yokes at either end of the propshaft must line up with one another otherwise the inherent non-linearity of the two hooke's joints will be out of phase and cause vibration.
