Has anyone had experience with the silicone valve cover gasket that's usually sold on ebay from time to time. At twice the price of the cork composite that Moss sells, is it worth the extra money? Mike K. Azusa CA. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

One of the few places I do not have an oil leak is around the cork valve cover gasket. Mike: If you soak the cork gasket overnight in oil before installation it will not leak. I thought the silicon rubber gasket was a good idea so I made one out of aircraft gasket material. It leaked. I went back to the cork gasket, it does not leak even after removal and reinstallation. Ken Porter Manchester NH TC 4147 LKe1021587@aol.com wrote:

Mike, I use the cork gasket too. Glue it to the cylinder head with clear or black silicone and it will be leak free for many removals of the vc. Kevin Brinkerhoff

I have installed the gaskets sold by "Roadster Gaskets" on my TD and I am very happy. They supply a valve cover and side cover as a set. I just ordered a set for TC 2850. I have no financial connection to them. Try _www.roadstergaskets.com_ (http://www.roadstergaskets.com) . regards, Tom TC 2850 [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

I use a home made nitrile rubber gasket. Buy a 1/4 in thick sheet and cut it out with a stanley knife. Leakfree and reusable. Ian Thomson. -------- --- Kevin Brinkerhoff kbrink53@hotmail.com> wrote:

There are different blends of cork gaskets that last much longer than 100% cork.  A 3/16 to 1/4" thick cork /nitrile rubber (Buna N) blend will last for years and look correct.  The material is not low cost, around $45 for a piece 42" x 12",  which is why plain cork was used at a cost of $18.  Six valve cover gaskets can be cut from a sheet this size, which equates to $7.50 vs $3 in material costs.  This is , according to one website, surplus material and is deemed low cost. http://www.ramgaskets.com/gasket-materi ... -material/ An all rubber nitrile rubber sheet costs $17 per gasket, and is special order since you need a softer, 40 durometer blend to effect a proper valve cover seal.   Add in labor, stocking charges , overhead, and you see why costs are even more..... I prefer the nitrile rubber 40 duro as , once it is in place, it lasts forever....and can be reused time and again as it does not take a 'set' like the cork gaskets. Based on Lee's recommendation several years ago I bought this and made a couple of gaskets from it.  Easy to mark and cut and has been working satisfactorily for me.  I believe I bought my material from McMaster Carr.
