Pertronics election igition

Hello group I know this has been talked about before but I can't seem to get into old messages. Moss has pertronix election ignition units on sale now and I'm thinking about getting one, but which one. I talked to Moss and they say I need to measure the length of the distributor cam, is this right? Moss sells one unit for symmetic or high lift cams and another unit for asymmetric cams. I just talked to pertronix and they say they have one unit for high lift cam and another for both the symmetric and asymmetric cam. How do i find out which cam I have, the distributor is a DKY4A and positive ground. Thanks Dave

I think Moss is right. A pertronix for a symmetric cam will not work for an asymmetric cam. Tried that and disaster. The two cams are difficult to distinguish from the renditions in Blower and elsewhere so get a micrometer and measure then you will be sure to get the right cam from Moss. The most reliable way to determine what distributor cam is installed in your distributor, is by looking at it. Looking at Blower's manual, the TC Instruction manual, or the MG TD/TF Workshop Manual, in the ignition section, last page, shows the three different types of distributor cams installed into the DKY4A distributors. They are Symmetric, Asymmetric, and High Lift. You will note that the Symmetric and High Lift look alike, being more square in shape, and the Asymmetric is more round shaped. The rotor notch is after the lobe on the Symmetric Cam, and before the cam lobe on the High Lift Cam (counter-clockwise rotation). Unless Pertronix has modified their cam cover, the required kits were: For Symmetric & High Lift, Positive (+) ground. LU-146P12 For Symmetric & High Lift, Negative (-) ground. LU146 For Asymmetric, Positive (+) ground. LU-146MP12 For Asymmetric, Negative (-) ground. LU-146M. I did have a cover that did not fit well on a Asymmetric cam. I had to use a Dremel tool, and grinding stone to make it fit. Took unit over to Pertronix, as had a questionable inductor unit as well. They exchanged kit for Symmetric/High Lift, with kit for Asymmetric. Haven't installed back onto distributor to verify that their exchange unit works, or cam cover fits without modifications.
