Broken axle pix

Post by dudespine » Mon Apr 25, 2005 4:55 pm

Hi All, For future reference, Jim was kind enough to post pictures of my broken right axle. I am in the process of collecting the replacement parts, and include pictures of the taper style axle and bearing nuts available from Bob Grunau (can't wait!). It seems 8122 has had this repair previously; as you can see from the side by side image I have two different styles of axle. One has a machined surface, the other (good) side has what seems to be shot peening. The break is a classic fatigue fracture and really highlights what Mike Sherrell outlines. I should also note that the right side had gear oil inside the hub while the left was clean (fortunately no damage to the brake linings). To me this suggests that the right side had a looser fit and sure enough my hubs are different in size, whereby the the right hub did not contact the outer race of the bearing. I'll be making some shims up, so if anybody needs these give me a yell. Mike
