Subject: Spinners
The copper hammers that are usually available and most of us carry in our tool kit are too hard and without exception damage the spinners - in other words useless ! The answer is to make and use a lead hammer as not only does it give a ' dead ' blow but it does not damage the ears of the spinner.
I have been using a lead hammer for ages now and to date there is no sign of any damage to the spinners. The head of the lead hammer is sacrificial and is easily regenerated when it starts to look ugly by making a simple mould ( come to think about it, I wish I could say the same about me ! ) and supporting the tubular steel handle whilst the lead solidifies.
Nylon headed hammers tend to skid off the spinner and possibly damage the spokes.

Just glancing through some recent messages re., the effectiveness of the self locking spinners on the TC, can anyone explain to me as to why the threads on the front spindles on an MGB are in fact opposite to that of a TC ? That is........on an MGB with wire wheels, the r/h front is a l/h thread and the l/h front is a r/h thread which is the opposite to that of a TC.
Put another way, on an MGB both wheels on the r/h side have l/h threads and on the l/h side they both have r/h threads.

Fellows an easy way to remember which is which on Knockoff is the little
saying
Solders go OFF to the FRONT and ON to the REAR. ( I know, I know but it is
easy to remember) This will keep you from reversing hubs when all are
disassembled.

I own both a TC and an MGB and this is not the case. A simple rule to
remember is that the Knockoff spinners are done up in the direction the
wheel rotates when travelling forward. If yours are different to this
then someone has put the hubs on incorrectly.

Maurice,
I am surprised that you have any wheels left on both your TC and MGB as in
fact the spinners should be tightened in the opposite direction to that of
the wheels when going forward. In other words, when you spin the road wheels
in the forward direction and hold on to the spinners then the spinners
should tighten up - l/h threads on the o/s and r/h on the n/s .
I corrected my earlier message as I was getting my spinners
and nuts all mixed up and very painful it was too !
