Does anyone know the correct thread size for the 6 bolts that hold the bell housing to the transmission case? Thanks, Rick Storms TC 6776

Rick, Well first there are 8 bolts, hell of a bell housing leak if you only install 6. They are 8 x 1.00 MM metric bolts. Bob Grunau Does anyone know the correct thread size for the 6 bolts that hold the bell housing to the transmission case? Thanks, Rick Storms TC 6776 <

Check the length. If they are too long they will foul the flywheel ring gear, be damaged, and strip the thread in the sump when you remove them. They are metric - 8X1mm with a 5/16" BS hex head orginally - commonly referred to as Nuffield's Mad Metric. Someone had put 5/16 coarse threaded bolts in TC7387. I helicoiled all the holes. The helicoil is a much better idea for the fine thread in soft aluminum. Regards, Charles Hill Rick Storms wrote:

This same thing had happened on my TD, and I bought an M8 Heli-coil kit at the local auto parts store. It was around $28, and it was surprising easy. I remember it didnt take more that an hour or so. Regards Mark TC8126

You guys are referring to the bolts that fasten the bell housing to the engine. The question is: The bell housing to the transmission bolts. Gene Roth

Oops! My mistake. Don't know the answer to that one, but they should be metric - probably either 8X1 or 10X1.5. Regards, Charles Hill Rothgene Roth wrote:

hi Rick - there are actually 8: they are 8 x 1.0mm as are all the bolts and studs in engine (MPJG as well as XPAG) and gearbox which would otherwise be 5/16". One important point though: Moss sells them but they are the same as their bellhousing bolts, 1" long, which is too short. They need to be at least 1 1/4" or 32mm. to give sufficient thread engagement. Needless to say, I make the correct ones under my "Mad Metrics" label. ocTagonally TCRoger, Devon, Olde England

Hi, I don't think the bolts are really 8X1.0mm are they? I think that would be a bolt 8mm dia. with a length of 1mm which is about 2 threads? I assume you're talking threads per inch, 1.0 as apposed to 1.25 or 1.50, right? Chip Hellie Dazed and confused (not really) --- Roger Furneaux roger.46tc@virgin.net> wrote:

OK, 8.0 diameter x 1.0 pitch x 30 or 35 mm long. And no, not threads per inch but 1.0 mm pitch which is 25.4 threds per inch.
