State of the auto industry in the U.K.

Last week we learned that MG-Rover had gone into bankruptcy, or "administration". Today the Associated Press reported that Prince Charles and his bride drove to church services in Scotland where they are on their honeymoon. Charles was driving an Audi.
How's that for poor timing.

Prince Charles first car was an MGC GT and the Royal family use British
cars to a great extent. I believe his personal car is a Bentley and a
couple of Aston Martins.
The Queen has a Bentley as an official car. Presumably the Audi was
bought to try to fool the press.

Bentley is owned by Volkswagon and Aston Martin by Ford. HRH Prince
Charles would have to drive a Rover or an MG to be 'British.' and,
given recent events, pretty soon MG Rover will either disappear or
be 'foreign.' Too bad that UK engineering excellence has always
been overshadowed by abysmally poor management and even worse labour
relations and performance. Where are the modern day Bill Morris's or
Cecil Kimbers??

MG needs to be rid of Rover. The MG F is a very good car, but like so many
MGs before, no further development was possible because Rover was eating all
the money.
And that's my grenade under the tent flap........

There is one British automobile company that was founded long before MG
and is still going.

Morgan is a boutique car producer and today is essentially a bistsa -
bits a this and bits a that assembled and essentially made to
order by Morgan. With waiting lists and a very limited range of
cars a succesfsful marque, but hardly a manufacturer!

Prince Charles bought the MG and the Astons when they were British
owned.
Princess Anne,s first car was a Rover and she drove a number of Reliant
Scimitars.
Prince Phillip drove an MG TC when he was courting the Queen and I
believe his last personal car was a Bristol.
The Queen drove a number of Rovers as personal cars.
The Queens official car is now a Bentley and Princess Anne and Prince
Charles also have Bentleys so presumably they have as much distaste for
BMW who own Rolls Royce as I have!
To my knowledge they buy British as much as possible and as I have said
before don't believe the press they just want to sell newspapers not
tell the truth.

Hmmm.
Soviet leaders always travelled in Zils as far as I recall - but I guess
no-one else liked them much. What is one supposed to conclude from the
preferences of people whose choices are constrained by their positions?
