Tach drive question

Tach drive
My tach drive quit working. When I disconnect from back of tach, not
turning. When I disconnect from back of reduction box, not turning. When I
turn cable by hand top end twists (cable appears to be good. When I turn
reduction box by hand other end turns (reduction box appears to be good.
When I start can, drive on rear of generator (dynamo) turns.
NOW: When I connect the reduction box to generator without brass coupling,
the screw slides into the drive slot in generator drive. When screw is
engaged in generator drive slot, I can not turn reduction box from output
end.(proves engaged, resistance in generator, means good connection.
When I install brass coupling, no drive at output of reduction box. I can
still turn reduction box by hand (no resistance from Generator. This means
screw is NOT engaged into generator drive slot. I have installed two
coupling kits from Abingdon, one from Moss, all same. tach will not turn
when coupling is in place. The two Abingdon couplings appeared to ''wear in'
the inside of the brass coupling. The moss has no such wear, but still does
not work either. As I recall, the original screw that screws into the front
of the reduction box was smaller than what Abingdon and Moss provide with
their kit. I (of course) dropped said screw, never to be found again. I can
not find a smaller head screw to fit the threads. I think is I had a screw
with a smaller head, same threads, it would allow the coupling to fully seat
and work. I have fiddle with this for 5 months now. Still no luck. When I
attach the coupling, the two pieces seem to slide apart, and the inner rind
around the subject screw will not let the coupling slide back enough to seat
in the distributor drive slot.
Any idea, and sources of the small head screw?
Lotta verbiage, picture would be quicker. but I wanted to get out all before
replies suggested what I have already tried. Tach drive quit about 2 years
ago, I replaced with an Abingdon coupling kit and it worked fine for about a
year, then this situation.

Paul,
You seem to have given us more information than we can decipher.
What, exactly, is your problem? Is it the reduction gear box, or the
Tachometer itself?
Does the reduction box work?
Does it fit properly into the generator keyway?
Does the Tach drive cable work?
Does the Tach register?
Are you having a problem with the clamp that hold the cable end in the
reduction box?

Paul; I ran into the same situation this very weekend. I replaced the armature in my generator and the tach did not work. I removed the tach drive and the drive appeared to work okay. What I found out was that I had a made up armature from a MGA that had an extension added to it to operate the drive. It was different in size to the replacement armature and the end of the small gearbox did not engage in the generator. I had to replace the drive end with a new unit and all is well. Maybe you too have mismatched units.
