G'day Group:
I have oft times wondered what the following numbers, which are located, stamped on the upper face of my TD's gearbox casing, mean? They appear on the small boss, on the front, near-side ( left ) face, outboard of the cover, where the gearbox joins the clutch housing (bell ). The number in question reads " TF 889 ".
I do not know if my car has ever had a gearbox renewal, so I reckoned that the numbers either designated the gearbox serial number or possibly that it was assigned for use in an early TF, but used as a replacement in the TD. The " TF " letters, however; may have no bearing on its being applied specifically for TF useage, and as I am not schooled in these matters I am putting this query out to those who are.
I cannot recall the number that is on the gearbox casing in my TC, but the spare TC gearbox casing has the number " XK 275 " stamped in a similar location. This I know does not refer to a Jaguar!
As I written I am not that swift, in MG number matters, so I call upon the membership to render their opinions as to the meaning of the above mentioned numbers. I can be contacted off the web-site if it is felt that replies, given " on-line ", will plug up the works.
Cheers for now then; respectfully:
Jack Emdall
