Glove Compartment

G'day Group: Finally, I have had to add my farthings worth to the above. According to The Webster's, Ninth Collegiate Dictionary, the term " glove compartment ", circa 1939, refers to a small storage compartment in the dashboard of an automobile. Furthermore, though; it does not point out what specific commodity is to be kept in there. " Glove box ", as defined by the same source, has no reference to the automobile whatsoever. Now the useage, " compartment or box ", I reckon, is like the old song, " you say tomato and I say---, well maybe " aluminium " is a better example, eh. To conclude: I have not filled my TD's " cubby hole " with the large, cumbersome, period radio, ( if one could locate such an animal in the first instance), or even a modern compact device, and I find it to be a marvellous piece of kit. It certainly saves the over filling and stretching of those poor door pockets, or the stashing of bits and things between your own legs or those of your passenger's. Are we back to 'staching bits of between my legs into things between my passenges legs again" ? If you have more than the glove biox holds, put it behind the squab. If more than the squab, get a luggage rack. If more than the rack, get a trailer. If more than the trailer, take another car. These cars are meant to drive, not tote household belongings. The 'glove box' is in the 'dash board'. Another curious term we use everyday. PTH

Hello listers. I am thinking of making and installing a small glove compartment under the dashboard (fascia) on the passenger (nearside) of my TC. Just a place to put sunglasses, camera, GPS unit, cell phone, goggles (of course) and so on. Has anyone done this, and if so, could you send pictures or tips. Rick, I have not installed a glove box as you mention but there is loads of room behind the dash for just that use, or to store spare parts. I saw a very neat installation at a car show using a "fold down" idea so the front of the dash was preserved in original form. The fellow used some hardware from a furniture/cabinet catalog and made a tidy fold down /fold up box. The only problem was when folded down, everything slid to the bottom but this was solved with a baffle to keep items in place. Felt lined and very useful.
