The adventure continues........I have just completed a complete re-gasketing
of TC 2850's motor including the sump & front lip seal in an attempt to
minimize or eliminate any oil leaks. To my dismay, when I filled the sump with
oil, a few drops dripped out of the rear seal drain hole before the motor was
even started. My question is; where could this oil be coming from? Oh yeah,
I also have an Al Moss rear seal kit installed. As spring is approaching, I
will drive it anyway, but I am befuddled by the static leak. I thought the
rear seal only leaked when the motor is running? Thanks in advance, this is a

I think this is referred to as "controlled seepage" by the British.

YOU MUST REALIZE THAT T-SERIES DO NOT LEAK OIL. THEY JUST MARK THEIR TERRITORY

Tom,
Assuming you filled a dry sump following installation of the gasketry, it is
improbable that you had a drip from the bell housing drip hole prior to
running the engine. Something else is at work here.
1. Was there some residual oil in the base of the bell housing ?
2. Did you, perchance, over-fill the oil? What dipstick do you have, TC or
TD?
3. The Moss oil seal was not properly installed. This is a worst case and
very unlikely giving a static drip with no engine turnover.
4.The cork seal at the rear of the sump was not properly fitted. Did you
ensure that the 'tabs" of the seal were tucked? Again, an unlikely fault
given no engine turnover.
What confounds me is that the level of the oil in the sump at rest is below
the gaskets. Suspicion #1 above is most appealing.
